Compassion and the New Priesthood: Transforming the Victorian Moral Economy?
I am an historian of Victorian science and society, focusing on the Victorian moral economy after the Darwinian turn. I am principally concerned with the renegotiation of compassion (including the related emotions of sympathy and empathy), as the moral register shifted from the context of the divine to that of the human. My research explores the emotional profile of late nineteenth-century humanism and its impact on society and social policy.
